As the Mediterranean yachting calendar prepares to reach its annual peak, with Cannes, Genoa and Monaco events scheduled in rapid succession in September, it is worth pausing, briefly, to consider the quieter shifts underway in the industry.

Yachting has always been a theatre of prestige. But what defines prestige today is evolving. Where once size and spectacle dominated the conversation, there is now a more nuanced vocabulary at play – one that includes discretion, heritage, and sensory refinement.

I have had the privilege of working across several dimensions of the luxury sector: from the restoration of storied yachts such as the iconic Christina O’, to the creation of bespoke linens, table-top decòr, and swimming pool textiles for vessels that serve as both homes and sanctuaries. In each case, the focus has been the same: to honour tradition while quietly advancing the standards of comfort and aesthetics, through a renewed appreciation for craftsmanship. A hand-finished jacquard towel, properly weighted. A linen hemstitched to echo the lines of a vessel’s hull. A dining setting that changes subtly with the light of the Tyrrhenian Sea. These are not indulgences, but markers of a lifestyle in which excellence is assumed, not performed.

Market data support this shift. According to Fortune Business Insights, the global yacht market – valued at $10.8 billion in 2023 – is expected to reach $15.4 billion by 2030, driven not only by new builds but by a significant growth in refits and long-term charters.

Owners and guests alike are seeking meaningful connection: with craftsmanship, with sea, and increasingly, with the environmental considerations that luxury can no longer afford to ignore. In the coming weeks, much will be said of beam width, e-propulsion systems, and naval architecture. These are, of course, fundamental aspects of sustainability in the yachting industry. I do believe that refitting goes in this direction: giving a new purpose and life to an item preserving its legacy. Without any need for noisy choices or extravagance.
